7 Deadly Zins 2006
A sinful blend indeed! Our flagship Zinfandel was devised by the two
Phillips brothers in their search for a blended Zin so captivating that
no one could refuse. With consistency in mind, the brothers decided to
blend the fruit of Lodi’s finest growers to fill the bottles of
Michael~David’s new-fangled wine. In the end, seven vineyards were
chosen for their superiority. Now, how do you label a wine so unique
in style? Looking to their past, the two Phillips brothers quickly
related the Seven Sins from their Catholic school upbringing to the
seven Old Vine Zinfandels blended in their wine. Lustful Flavors: A vibrant, sweet bouquet of
raspberry jam, molasses and cinnamon toast evoke the senses of carefree
youthful nights. Excellent oak integration provides silken tannins and
spice to pair with Lodi’s unrestricted wild berry fruit. Gluttonous Pairings: Our 7 Deadly pairs sinfully
well with BBQ’d Salmon, prime rib or grilled veggies. Get crazy with
delectable dark chocolate desserts!

A to Z Rose
Gorgeous aromas of fresh pure strawberries, raspberries, provincial herbs, wildflowers, juicy cherries, watermelon and mixed spices. The wine is brightand lush, at the same time finishing clean and crisp. Full of flavor and pleasure, the 2006 Rosé is a perfect wine with all types of food and will drink wonderfully over the next year. The 2006 A to Z Rosé comes from Sangiovese grapes grown in Southern Oregon’s Del Rio Vineyard located 36 miles north of the California border. The block is on a Southwest facing slope composed of large oval river rocks. Daytime temperatures in the summer can reach 100 degrees, while the nights always fall back to the 40s, perfect conditions for bolder reds. Harvested just shy of peak ripeness to retain bright acidity and aromas and flavors of fresh red fruits, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and left to sit for one to three days. We pressed the grapes, settled the juice overnight and then racked to stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation was blocked to retain brightness and juiciness. 3,000 -750 ml bottle cases were made. The 2006 Oregon growing season started late and wet needing more sprays than normal to keep the mildew at bay. Great weather for flowering set the largest crop that that we have seen in a few years, a still modest 2.5 tons/acre average (opposed to 1.4 – 1.8 tons/acre like we saw in 2003, 2004 and 2005). In Southern Oregon we had the best of all worlds, higher yields, but smaller clusters with smaller berries. June and July were gorgeous and hot, but cooled appreciably in August to begin a soft, slow slide into harvest. It stayed relatively mild in the south after a bit of rain late in August and early September allowing a slow, even ripening of epic importance. We were able to pick beautifully ripe small-berried clusters at our leisure. The 2006 vintage will be remembered in Southern Oregon as the finest in recent memory.

AVV Syrah 2005
The Alexander Valley is a phenomenal place to grow Bordeaux varietals
like Cabernet Sauvignon, but what we've discovered over our years of
grape-growing is that Rhone grapes like Syrah do pretty well here too.
The 2005 displays big aromas of blueberries and sandalwood along with a
subtle nose of violets. On the palate, there are rich flavors of
blackberries, allspice and hints of black licorice and menthol.
We were able to preserve all those lush flavors by being rigorous in
the vineyard. The 2005 vintage delivered the kind of conditions that
meant a big harvest. With Syrah, that could have meant washed out
flavors. Dramatically culling the fruit in our vineyards, thus keeping
the yields down, meant we could deliver a concentrated Syrah reflective
of the Alexander Valley.

Notes - The 2005 Blackstone Merlot perfectly demonstrates the
'Blackstone style' - rich fruit aromas, elegance, supple oak characters

Calamity Cab Sauv Alexander Valley 2005
The
Calamity 05 Alexander Valley was grown on mature 30 year old vines that produce
classic Cabernet Sauvignon flavors and aromas of cassis, cedar and sweet red
fruits. The difference with this 05 to last year’s offering is that this
wine is brooding, chunky and is one that will be able to age. Flavors of deep
red and black fruits on the palate combine with vanilla from the oak barrels
and hints of cedar forming a long and tasty finish. The 05 Alex has excellent
structure, depth and concentration. Although a less seductive wine than last
year’s, it is a huge mouth-full of wine and one that begs for a nice
grilled piece of beef or lamb chop. |
