Brunier Telegramme CDP 2004
It pours clear garnet, very light in color for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It seems light on the nose and palate, too, opening with a vinous scent of raspberries, spice, faint vegetal notes and a high-toned whiff of volatile acidity. It's a little more inviting in its flavor, juicy and very tart, simple red fruit and white pepper over almost sour acidity, on the thin side.

Calamity Cab Sauv Alexander Valley 2005
The Calamity 05 Alexander Valley was grown on mature 30 year old vines that produce classic Cabernet Sauvignon flavors and aromas of cassis, cedar and sweet red fruits. The difference with this 05 to last year’s offering is that this wine is brooding, chunky and is one that will be able to age. Flavors of deep red and black fruits on the palate combine with vanilla from the oak barrels and hints of cedar forming a long and tasty finish. The 05 Alex has excellent structure, depth and concentration. Although a less seductive wine than last year’s, it is a huge mouth-full of wine and one that begs for a nice grilled piece of beef or lamb chop.

Charbonniere CDP Perdrix 03
The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix reveals a saturated dark ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a classic perfume of black cherries, raspberries, flowers, and a notion of barnyard/earth. With a fleshy texture, medium to full body, loads of depth, low acidity, ripe tannin, and wonderful sweetness, purity, and overall elegance, it resembles a synthesis in style between a grand cru Cotes de Nuits and a Chateauneuf du Pape.

Charbonniere CDP VV 2003
The best balanced wine of the entire portfolio of 2003s is the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. A complex nose of mineral, kirsch liqueur, raspberries, balsam, and pepper jumps from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, nicely layered, structured, rich wine with notes of black cherry and raspberry. Deep but with lovely ripe tannin, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for 10-12 years.

Pallieres Gigondas 03
WA Rating: 90

This is a large, complicated domaine because of so many different parcels and micro-climates. The wine spends a year in tank after which a selection is made, and it is moved to old wood foudres for the second year. The 2003 Les Pallieres, which embodies the essence of Provence, reveals bold notes of garrigue, pepper, herbes de Provence, saddle leather, and plenty of kirsch and earth. The wine is medium-bodied, ripe, but has slightly drier tannins than the more seamless 2004. The 2003 is an impressive, hefty Les Pallieres that should drink well for 10-12 years.
